Santa Claus? Mikulás? Nikolaus?

Red dress, long white beard, deep voice and lots of little gifts. Maybe these are the key features of Santa Claus. But how is he in different regions of the world? E.g. in yours?

Prehistoric men

We had a short project about the prehistoric man some weeks ago. We made some music with modern versions of prehistoric musical instruments, we communicated like prehistoric man supposed to communicate, we learned the names of some prehistoric tool both in English and Spanish and at least we made some ancient tools.   There is a nice place called Animaya, in Mérida. This is basically a zoo but there are also playgrounds there and a water playground and you can sit on the zoo train for a round or even there is a boot you can use for a short ride on the…

Szilvás gombóc

Szilvás gombóc

I planned for a long time to make a cooking event together. First, I planned some to make together some authentical Mexican food but we ended up in szilvás gombóc (plum dumpling). This is a Hungarian food (maybe not Hungarian, but very common in the country). It is like a pastry, but our family usually eats it as a main course after a square soup. There were just a few of us, 5 kids altogether and their mommies at our cooking event. I liked it so much and the kids also enjoyed preparing the food. First, we made the dough, rolled…

Weekly meetup – Día del Muertos

This time we met in the Parque del Fraccionamiento around the Día del Muertos. This park is a huge one in the eastern part of Mérida with some small pyramids in it. We could hear there a nice and very informative presentation about the Día del Muertos from Clau and her daughter. After the presentation, the kids (and parents) had the opportunity to make a painting about the Día del Muertos or playing on the playground. We had huge papers and some watercolor for painting.   Some of the children painted their own altars - because in Mexico people usually make…

First cenote experience

After a long time, we managed to visit our first cenote in Motul, close to Mérida. Earlier I was in "covered natural pool" in Hungary, in the Cave Bath of Miskolc-Tapolca. That one is not under the ground level, but I felt similar in the cenote like there.   What is a cenote? Cenote definition is - a deep sinkhole in limestone with a pool at the bottom that is found especially in Yucatán. After the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. The water is visible under the surface, you can see in the picture where we had to go down.   Cenote Sámbula in Motul…
